Enjoy the journey: beginnings2/16/2018 Throughout most of my teenage years I dreamt of living on a small island in a thacthed hut surrounded by native girls. I guess it wasn't very realistic, but I did live my dream, well kinda. What happened was I found Christ and eventually became a missionary in the West Indies.
With my wife, kids and I landed in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin islands in 1985. Called the American Paradise, St. Croix was one of the 50+ islands the United States purchased in 1917 to protect the shipping lanes during the first world war. St. Croix is approximately 7 miles wide and 21 miles long (small island). It is sub-tropical and has an amazing history. Slavery was ended in 1848, and the islands were purchased by the United States in 1916 to become the U.S. Virgin Islands in 1917. Alexander Hamilton was born in Nevis but, lived much of his youth in St. Croix. He wrote wrote an essay that was published in the Royal Danish-American Gazette, offering a detailed account of a hurricane which had devastated Christiansted on August 30,1772. Recognizing his diverse talents, Alexander's employers and additional community supporters, provided him with funds to attend college on the North American mainland. Alexander Hamilton left St. Croix in the fall of 1772, eventually settling in New York just before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. The rest, as they say, is history... The island is dotted with monuments to pre-american St. Croix history. The ruins of Sugar plantations, and early West Indian life style were a fantastic place to begin our journey as missionary church planters. Who couldn't enjoy the journey in the warm Caribbean sun refreshed by the sea breeze among the unique smells of mango and coconut. In subsequent posts I will begin the story of West Indies Christian Mission and adventuring among the islands of the Caribbean.
